This is not “How to make PV Solar Cells”.
It is possible to home-make Copper Oxide and other kinds of materials but that is a whole nother story which I may do in the future.

i took some solar yard lights apart and put them together in a series. i was told if you take AMPS times VOLTS = WATTS. do you test it with ac volt or dc volts? I tested mine with dc volts and got 41 volts in good sun and had my meter set on Ma or milliamps and got .83 which i am asuming that is .83 of one amp now i took those and multiplied .83 times 41 volts to = 34.03 watts. Is this large enough to charge a car battery in a day? And doese it make a difference for amps on how fast it charges or watts. i also was looking around and found 30 watt panels but had higher amps. I am very interested in building solar panels but i realize i dont know what i need to do to make shur they are big enough. my panel is only 9inch by 10 inch. It seems weird that i am putting out 41 volts

A solar panel is a DC device, you so want DC voltage.

I don’t think your panel is big enough: milliAmps are THOUSANDTHS of an amp, not hundredths. So 83 mA = 83/1000 = 0.083A, ie your power is 3.403 watts rather than 34.03 watts.

To get a 30W output in good sunlight you’ll typically need a panel area that’s equivalent to about about 50cm x 50cm.

Car batteries are apparently about 1kWh:

So even if you had 30W, you’d need to run it for 1000/30 = 33 hours in good sunlight. So it won’t do a great job.

The reasons for the tiny output will probably be the small surface area (normally people cover whole roofs in solar panels and that way you get sensible power output), and because yard lights are cheap, so have cheap solar panels made from the cheapest amorphous silicon they can get their hands on – so they’re not very efficient either!

I’m building a solar panel with solar cells from ebay and I wanted to know what supplies will I need other than 1.Solar Cells 2.Soldering Gun 3.Solder 4.Flux Pen 5.Tabbing 6.Tabbing Wire 7.Bus Wire 8. Materials for the frame 9.12 Volt Batteries

What kind of power inverter do I need if I’m trying to charge 12 Volt Car Batteries? I need these supplies to be-able to handle a moderate amount of power because I want to keep adding on cells to my panel. I pretty much know how to make the panel but what all do I need to connect the home built Solar Panel to the batteries? I’m willing to spend around $500.00 to $800 for all the parts total a side from the solar cells. I have 140 3×6 cells I should be buying another 60 and want to make a panels that will charge car batteries. I need to know what parts and equipment I will need aside from the solar panels to to charge them. Equipment that that tells me how much power is flowing and if the batteries are charged are not. the wattage of your power converter will depend on how much power you want to be able to use at any given time. buy one as big as you can afford, you could always add another converter in parallel later if the first one you buy isn’t big enough. the power converter will be used to convert the 12 volts from the batteries into 120 volts to power light, etc. solor panels should produce 12 volts and basically directly connect to the batteries.

We don’t use much electricity, so we don’t need anything too heavy-duty. I would like to run our cabin on solar electricity, but am having trouble getting help as far as what size battery, inverter, solar panel I will need. I know I also need a regulator, but don’t know anything about them either. From start to finish, what do I need and where can I get all he parts I need at a reasonable price? Is it cost-effective to buy an already put together solar generator?

The stuff they sell seems to more or less live up to the specifications.

If you decide to buy discounted panels be a little careful. It was my experience that the specifications overstated the performance by 50% to 100%

BTW – the best investment you can make is a good recent book on the subject. Anything copyright before 2007 is probably obsolete.

It can be small, or it can be large.

I suggest reading up on the photovoltaic effect which will give you a few pointers but I don’t think you will have much luck. Solar panels use exotic materials and are built on scales and to precisions that you would find difficult to accomplish at home.

Its actually not as difficult as you think. At first I looked at buying some but the costs seemed high so I did a little research on assembly myself. I ended up going with the guide from http://www.ebooksreviewed.info/earth4energy and it worked out well. It included places to get the cheapest parts along with instructions. I saved a lot of money and it was not so complicated as I first thought.

I want to install one in my garden but havent found a good site on the internet. Is it very expensive to build one? How do I start? I want to contribute with the planet and of course also stop paying so much for electricity. If someone has some good info, I am happy.

Keep in mind, photovoltaic can be very expensive. What I would recommend is to start with a single panel. Your costs generally come from the batteries and inverter to change your electricity from direct current to alternating current and for the storage of this energy.
If you would like to save in electricity costs, not be over the top in expense, and be good to the planet, pending on where you live, look into Geothermal.
